River pollution in some Mediterranean Islands. 1991. Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry, 3132, 25563.
River pollution is described in seven West Mediterranean Islands, with low treatment of discharges to rivers, Domestic pollution therefore depends on inland population density plus the presence of long-flowing rivers, being most in Sicily. Industrial pollution is also most in Sicily, from river gravel extraction. Other river-discharging industry is sparse. Soil erosion is high in Malta and Gozo, while general farming is most intensive in these, Sicily (and lowland Mallorca, where river run-off, and so pollution, is low).
